Show title: Two To One
Started with the first series in 1989, and was titled Two to One around 1995.
The first group was shown in Haifa Israel in 1989 -90, the second was
created especially to show in Paris between 1990 – 93, and the third
was shown in the Ezair Gallery Madison Ave NYC in 2003.
Shows in Spain in Barcelona and Granada between 1998 and 2006 did not include this series..
Insight helpful for addressing meaning in my work:
It is…
~ Literally an experiment playing with any two at all
~ An intentional invention of a media which presents conflicts and then tries to
make peace or arrive at their solutions
~ A conceptual invitation to colors, lines and other elements which allows for
different orders to play as two until they make one
~ Emotionally fighting within a reality which Is lacking and needs more
~Another sense of depth, relationship and movement with tendencies towards an awakening balance
~ Conscious action as with a dancer or a painter where the artist plays the first part, and the canvas as dance floor plays the second
~ A spiritual presentation of a light which is beyond darkness for those eyes that hold compassion
~Service where the work presents another avenue to notice and
~Poetically pick up and carry through endless roads..
About Yosef the Artist (in his own words..)
http://www.josephtany.com
I was born and raised in Israel and began showing my work in Tel Aviv starting in 1976, then in Haifa in the Eighties. In 1989 I was invited to show in Paris, followed by Barcelona Spain and then NYC, in the Ezair Gallery, Madison Avenue.
Today I am a freelance artist.
I don’t have the proper words or space to tell you where I’ve been and how I arrived and show here, but two years ago we visited in Santa Cruz and it made enough of an impression on us that we decided to come back.
Statement:
Presenting the Two to One and this show in particular presents great challenges for me;first is in the fact that my work at heart is showing with all that goes with that and then the creation of this show with Kirbi curating is yet another challenge ~ both are inspiring
Additional / Reviews
* The Ritz - Haifa ( three shows 1983-7 ) By Nili Mendes
Joseph Tany’s paintings are overcoming the loud crowd at the Ritz, He does not deal with intellectualities, or with artistic message. His attitude is straight forward and authentic. His themes are usual. The port scene and trees in the backyard. Yet he reveals turbulent inner world unlike no other, which cries in the wild. The port from the terrace is made with rough brush strokes of red and green, and the trees next to it in blue and black. Full of power.
* Arbel Gallery (Tel Aviv 1994-5) - By A. Rolnik
It would be hard to not be astonished by the immense energy concealed in the work of Joseph Tany. Energy flows from every brush strok creating an enormous emotional impact. You may find glimpses and influence of the impressionism. Sparks of Mondrian’s abstraction and some colors from Kandinsky, but he is mostly influenced by the immediate expressionism like in Appel and Sutin. Yos loads the canvas with strong and hypnotic statements. The figures are merging with the dynamic background, which in fact, initiates from the figure itself. The relationship, which is created between the figure and the overall surrounding, brings real intimacy onto the spectator watching. There is no conventions or barriers between you and the work and thus, there is a strong and impressive reaction.
* Gallery Now Florida( presented from 1999 - 2005)- By Kris Kline
The paintings of Joseph Tany are exuberant with contrasting colors - greens, blues, reds, oranges and turquoise. His wide authoritative brush strokes create an intense sense of movement as they sweep across his canvasses. In Shepherd with Sheep he creates a hilly landscape with frolicking sheep which is rich with gestural passages. This artist does not paint for the passive viewer. While his subjects may at first strike as passive, upon closer inspection each one bursts with its own highly charged energy. His strong, evocative art is
suggestive of personal journeys of perhaps epic proportions that move through a pictorial style of careful and respectful study. Tany studied painting with E. Elgarat at the Bezalel Academy of Art in Jerusalem and studied etching and worked with Al Putov in Haifa, Israel and Paris, France. He has lived, worked and exhibited throughout Israel and in Paris, France and Barcelona, Spain
* Ezair Gallery -(Dec 2003)- 905 Madison Ave NYC

Joseph Tany - Yos is powerful with colors, showing a clear path from movement of energy to the figurative . He combines mystery and discovery, eroticism and spirituality. His figures are too vibrant to hold still, and his abstracts always swirl. He feels close to the ‘Cobra’ group and to both schools of N.Y and Paris. Yos has shown in Paris, Barcelona and Telaviv and is having his first show in New York.
* Angela di Belo Director, Agora Gallery, NYC (reviewed in 2005)
The paintings exhibit tonal charm of composition, with a reconciliation of opposites as a source of poignancy. The work transcends multiplicity of ethereal energy, and journey into the realm of the physical world.
